The International Economic Growth (IEG) Division within Abt Associates conducts projects in agriculture, economic development, labor, competitiveness, environment, and trade. We work in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Our clients include the USAID, DFID and multilateral financial institutions such as the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
The IEG division in Abt Associates seeks a Survey Expert on a consultancy basis to support a DFID-funded impact evaluation of a multi-laterally funded program to promote food security and agricultural sector development. The AgResults initiative uses results-based financing intended to create incentives for private sector innovation and engagement in otherwise underserved markets whose functioning is critical to agricultural development and smallholder competitiveness.
Consultancy activities will average 50 days per year over a five-and-a-half-year period and are anticipated to begin April 2013. Abt is also recruiting separately for an Agricultural Economist to conduct qualitative data collection and analysis for the same project, and candidates who meet the requirements of both positions will be considered for a position encompassing both sets of responsibilities.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Development of survey questionnaires to support evaluation
- Interfacing with the implementation organization to inform survey development
- Interfacing with evaluation team leads to support survey and analysis for the evaluation
- Interfacing with the local survey firm and managing all aspects to ensure quality survey data, including pilot testing, translation of questionnaires in local language, monitoring of data collection activities and data quality control measures
- Masters in Agriculture Economics, Economics or related discipline with minimum 5 years of experience
- 2-3 years of experience in conducting and/or overseeing large-sample survey implementation in developing country contexts
- Experience in conducting surveys addressing rural livelihoods and agriculture is a plus
- Excellent written and communication skills in English.
- Knowledge of STATA or related software is a plus
- Experience in conducting impact evaluations is a plus
